Pebble Mosaics
In the very beginning, mosaics were fabricated using pebbles found in nature, without altering their shape or using technology to manipulate their appearance in any way. Creating such pebble mosaics requires a great deal of technical flair, as well as good judgement in deciding exactly how each stone should be placed as an integral part of a coherent, well-designed whole.
I use lime or clay as a temporary base, as this is a slowly-drying material – this gives me time to deliberate the arrangement of the pebbles, and make modifications when needed. The additional time also allows me to work on different parts of the mosaic at the same time, resulting in a dynamic working process in which the mosaic reveals itself as it is created.
