Roman Mosaic Floors for Villa Ventorum, Somerset, UK

Villa Ventorum, that is, “villa of the winds”, was commissioned by Roman Mosaic Workshops Ltd. and made with a team of mosaicists of the London School of Mosaic (LSoM).

This was truly a once-in-a-lifetime project, where I was a core member of the team working on the re-creation of an entire Roman villa on the Newt Estate, Somerset. The reconstructed villa is within walking distance of the remains of the original villa, which dates back to 351 AD, and was discovered by archaeologists in the 19th century.

Over a period of six months, we completed four vast mosaic floors in the LSoM workshop. These were then transferred to the site for installation. I had the privilege to work on the installation in situ, a project which was completed over eight weeks, in the summer of 2021. To date, no other Roman villa of this scale has been reconstructed in the UK.

Mosaic making is traditionally a team effort, and I am glad to have been able to participate in a larger project with a fantastic group of people.
